A number of by-products are generated as a result of the pulp and paper manufacturing process. These by-products are often nothing more than unsuitable fibre, bark, and other products that are a result of making steam and electricity.
In order to reduce the need to
landfill these by-products, a number of research projects have taken place. Resolute Forest Products has worked closely with the local agricultural community to use some of the
ash generated from burning bark. The ash, similar to ash from a household wood stove, is applied to local farmers’ fields as a soil amendment to provide neutralizing and fertilizer benefits.
Extensive research is also being conducted to find a use for the unusable fibre that comes from the mill. This fibre is not suitable for making pulp and paper, but may have value in other applications.
