Water: Pulp & Paper

Environment Water - Environment WaterResolute Forest Products Thunder Bay operations depend heavily on large supplies of water to produce high quality kraft pulp and newsprint.

With daily flows through our mills measured in millions of gallons, maintaining the water quality of our outflow is a tremendous undertaking. and one that Resolute Forest Products takes very seriously.

Waste water treatment include the control and removal of:
  • Any toxic substance and chemical
  • Excessive heat in wastewater
  • Organic materials producing high Biochemical Oxgen Demand
  • Total Suspended Solids in wastewater, and
  • Leachate in groundwater

Resolute Forest Products has a complex system of waste water treatment processes in place to maximize our water quality and reduce our usage. These include:

  • An efficient (re)design of manufacturing systems
  • Installation of latest control, treatment and recovery equipment
  • Ongoing water quality monitoring, 24/7, and
  • Ongoing research and development.

We are also working to go well beyond existing government regulations, For example, our Water Effluent Reduction Plan (WERP) resulted in a 22.5% reduction in water used and effluent produced at year-end, 2002. In the article “Description of Effluent Monitoring” you can view the results of our effluent discharges.

Initiatives

Kam River Studies Our pulp and paper manufacturing process requires vast amounts of fresh water.

Planning & Programs

Resolute Forest Products Environmental Management System Resolute Forest Products has always strived to ensure our operations are conducted in an environmentally sound manner.

Regulations

Effluent Monitoring Both the Federal and Provincial governments require the monitoring of “process effluents” as they are discharged to the receiving water (such as into the Kaministiquia River at our Thunder Bay mill).
