Resolute Forest Products Thunder Bay produces kraft pulp. And like every pulp mill in the world, emits a “rotten egg” smell from the process. This doesn’t mean Resolute is not concerned about air emission. In fact we have aggressive air quality programs currently in place with enhancements planned for the future, as part of Resolute’s overall Air Improvement Program.
All machinery impacts the quality of our air by releasing:
- dust particles
- exhaust
- heat
- and odour
At Resolute we’re proud to say we’ve been highly successful at reducing our air emissions. In fact, in our mills our performance is nothing short of dramatic—with reductions of over 80% in just 10 years.
So why does our kraft mill still smell?
But attention to air quality at Resolute involves a lot more than just getting rid of the smell. For example, massive “precipitators” trap ash and other solid material before it can hit the environment. Other equipment reduces gases and heat, converting some these into energy to run the mill.
All of our operations in northern Ontario have air quality programs in place. To find out more go to >> air: pulp and paper air: woodlands, air: sawmill.
