Ambient Air Monitoring Data

Resolute Forest Products has an ambient air monitoring network that continuously measures various air quality parameters within the community.

The stations, which were developed in conjunction with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment (MOE) and with input from public, are designed to track and monitor specific air emissions from the Thunder Bay Operation and surrounding air shed.

There are two permanant monitoring stations located on Broadway Avenue (Vicker Heights Community Centre) and on Frederica Street, near the corner of Crawford Street.  These stations are designed to measure continuously Total Reduced Sulphur (TRS) that is the odourous compound from Kraft Mills.  They also measure Total Suspended Particulate Matter as well as monitor various weather related parameters.

The Stations are developed and maintained to MOE standards and protocols and the data generated is audited and tracked regularily by the MOE.  The stations are operated on behalf of Resolute by Rowan Williams, Davies, Irwin Inc. http://www.rwdi.com/

Also included in both stations are continous monitors which measure Fine Particulate Matter, also known as PM 2.5.  Resolute Forest Products is participating in a cross jurisdictional research project on the generation and levels of PM 2.5 in Thunder Bay, which includes participants from local industry, MOE, Environment Canada, Thunder Bay District Health Unit, Fort William First Nation, Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada (PAPRICAN) and a number of other community groups.   PAPRICAN  also operates a mobile monitoring station which is currently located on Fort William First Nation.  Information collected from the research project will help regulatory agencies understand the sources of fine particulate and develop potential strategies for control.
