In 2003, AbitibiBowater Thunder Bay Woodlands, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (
OMNR) , the
Living Legacy Trust (LLT) , and Outward Bound Wilderness School formed a partnership to initiate the Black Sturgeon Access Improvement Project.
A Lands for Life land use decision moved timber allocations from the Black Sturgeon/Camp 45 road area to another section of the Black Sturgeon
Sustainable Forest License. As a result, road maintenance activities were then relocated to the area surrounding the new timber allocations.
However, continued recreational traffic as well as traffic to and from Outward Bound Wilderness School on the road caused significant degradation to occur.
The Black Sturgeon Project included the rehabilitation of seven water crossings, grading and gravelling the existing road, as well as brushing and debris removal. This work significantly improved the safety of recreationists as well as students at Outward Bound travelling on the road.
